Nepal’s parliament has elected Bidya Devi Bhandari as its president today. Before becoming the president, she was the vice-chairperson of Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) and chair of All Nepal Women Association. She won by 105 votes against Kul Bahadur Gurung. She is Nepal’s second president and first women who became President of Nepal, since the nation was turned into a republic after abolishing the centuries-old monarchy. She is the former defence minister of the Government of Nepal.
